Pesticide Education, Training and Certification

Pesticide Education, Training and Certification

Pesticide Applicator and Vendor Training and Certification in Canada

Pesticide applicators and vendors must be certified in order to sell or apply pesticides in Canada. Certification programs are the responsiblity of the provincial and territorial governments and are based on the Standard for Pesticide Education, Training and Certification in Canada.

- Provincial/Territorial Pesticide Certification Programs

- NAFTA Applicator Core Exam Project

The Standard for Pesticide Education, Training and Certification in Canada (referred to as the National Standard) consists of a series of documents that outline the structure and criteria for applicator and vendor certfication programs in Canada. It is made up of 14 documents divided into the following three parts:

- Framework (Part 1):

- Applicator Basic Knowledge Requirements (Part 2):

- Vendor/Dispenser Basic Knowledge Requirements (Part 3):

The FPT Working Group on Pesticide Education, Training and Certification

The Working Group on Pesticide Education, Training and Certification (WGPETC) is responsible for the National Standard and related pesticide education initiatives.
WGPETC is comprised of federal, provincial and territorial representatives involved in pesticide regulation or education and reports to the

Federal/Provincial/Territorial Commitee on Pest Management & Pesticides - Brochure: Pesticide Education, Training and Certification in Canada

This Brochure provides a quick summary of the National Standard including information on its use, components, benefits and development.

Pesticide Certification Information.  British Columbia
Pesticide certification for dispensers and applicators must be in the appropriate category (see category descriptions). There is a separate study kit and exam for each category.

Study Materials
Order study materials for the selected certification category from the BC Government's Office Products Centre (located in Victoria, BC). See the list of study kit contents and prices for each category on the second page of the Order Form.

Certification Examinations
When you have obtained the study materials and are prepared to write the exam, look at the exam instructions (PDF: 210 KB / 7 pages) linked here and also enclosed with the study materials. Candidates can arrange to write the BC certification exam at many government agents' offices and some colleges across BC, and also outside of BC, as listed in the exam instructions (PDF: 210 KB / 7 pages).

Why Certification?

The purpose of certification is to ensure a sound level of competence by all commercial pesticide applicators.  Professional applicators must be knowledgeable about:

  • safety precautions
  • proper use and handling of pesticides
  • current legislation governing pesticide use
  • managing pest problems through an integrated pest management approach, and
  • environmental protection.

Exterminator

If you apply pesticides commercially and you are not a Technician or Trainee, you need an exterminator licence from the MOE which authorizes you to apply pesticides according to your licence. All new exterminators are required to pass a certification exam under the new curriculum, prior to obtaining the pesticide licence from MOE.
